Presentations and Workshops

Fred (Kato) Mutebi

This Ugandan artist gave a presentation on his multiple color woodcut prints during the opening reception of his artwork at the museum and MCC's Art Gallery in February 2007. Mr. Mutebi uses his art to tell the worldwide community about the splendor, cultural and socio-political life in Uganda and Africa.

Priscilla Crumel

Local storyteller Priscilla Crumel portrayed Mary McLeod Bethune during the closing ceremony of "Many Faces, One Story" Exhibition in November 2006.

Linda Goss

A nationally known storyteller, Linda Goss gave a storytelling workshop at the museum in November of 2005.

Dan Schafer of the Florida Humanities Council

Professor Shafer described the fascinating life of Anna Madgigine Jai Kingsley. A legendary African princess, Anna was sold into slavery as a teenager to the Kingsley Plantation in Florida and eventually became the owner of her own farm and slave workers.

Florida Artist/Storyteller/Quilter Kianga Jinaki Hanif

Kianga Jinaki Hanif introduced some of the quilt designs that were secret codes of the Underground Railroad at a Quilt Workshop during February 2005.

Musician/Storyteller Madafo Lloyd Wilson

Madafo Llyod Wilson incorporated the "Middle Passage" and other experiences into his presentation on the role the oral tradition played in obtaining freedom of enslaved Africans. Students from Wings Academy of Sarasota were among the participating audience.
