Outdooring of a Child: An Ancient African Tradition

Print by artist Frank Hopper, quote by the late author Alex Haley. The print captures an ancient rite of passage in Africa in which a child is lifted aloft three times in tribute to the great African trinity of tribe, jungle and God.

Born in 1924 on a farm in southern Indiana, Mr. Hopper found his first artistic inspiration in the vigorous farm animals surrounding him. During WWII, Mr. Hopper served in the Navy as a pilot. In 1945 he entered Chicago Art Institute. He remained in Chicago for nearly 20 years, becoming a nationally renowned painter.

His paintings are in demand by large corporations, and he has painted commissioned portraits for President Nixon, Reagen, and Bush. His work, "A Thousand Points of Light," was presented to President Bush.

The United Negro College Fund and other charitable organiizations include Mr. Hopper among their benefactors.
